The site

Wild Northumbrian can be found at Thorneyburn which is a stones throw away from Greenhaugh, just six miles from the small town of Bellingham in the stunning Northumberland International Dark Skies Park.

When you arrive

On arriving at the site, you will find the parking areas and the main communal blocks and huts which house the toilets and showers and the kitchen area. Before your stay you will be sent a downloadable site map to ensure everything is as easy of possible to find including parking, your accommodation, the kitchen and washing facilities and other key areas. This can also be found as a download from the bottom of this page and on our contact page.

Toilets, showers & kitchen

The site has communal kitchen shed and also a shower and toilet block in the old coach house next to the main house. Each accommodation has its own composting loo, outdoor kitchen sink area and outdoor bush shower, except for Swallow Hut which makes use of the shower block. In addition, Brock yurt and Houlet treehouse will have a Hikki hot tub from 2024.

The shower and toilet block have underfloor heating and are always bright and clean, ready for you to use. The kitchen is an ideal place to do your dishes and prepare food when you need to spread out a little. Each yurt or hut has it’s own shelf in a fridge so that you can keep your essentials cool, handy in warmer weather.

Dogs

Dogs are very welcome throughout the site including in all accommodation. Please do keep them on leads if they may encounter livestock – there are often sheep in the surrounding fields. If in doubt, keep them on until you get a chance to work out which areas might be suitable for them to be off lead. Please ensure dogs are clean before entering yurts and huts and that they use their own beds and bedding.

Mobile phones & internet

You are also welcome to use available sockets in the kitchen hut to charge your mobile phones etc. but please be aware that if you leave them there you do so at your own risk.

There is no mobile phone signal at the site and also no 3G/ 4G internet signal. Of course one of the nice things about being at the site is this lack of connectivity to the outside world – forget your messages, emails and social media and just… relax! If you do need to get online, the Hollybush Inn in Greenhaugh which is just a short walk or drive away has free wifi for it’s patrons and you can also easily travel to Bellingham just a few miles away you will get phone signal and also 3G/ 4G. The Cheviot Hotel and Public House in Bellingham also has Wifi that is free to use for those using the bar and facilities.

Preserving the landscape & enhancing your stay

We are committed to sitting as lightly on the landscape as possible and to that end, our site may seem a little different from other ‘glamping’ and wild camping sites that you may have visited.

Each of the huts and yurts is set within its own little area of the site, ensuring that you have peace and privacy from other guests. To ensure that the site looks as tranquil and unspoilt as possible, the paths between the main site area and the accommodation are small tracks rather than paved or covered ones.

Similarly there are no outdoor lights along the way. Again, to preserve the dark skies for which the area is famed and to give as natural an experience as possible.

Both of these mean you need to remember two simple things; sensible footwear and a torch! The site map that you will be sent on booking will guide you easily to the yurt or hut that you have chosen.

On arriving, please check the map board and collect a wheelbarrow from outside of the stone stable block which houses the toilet and showers. Then, using torch light if necessary, make your way to your hut or yurt with your possessions and start to enjoy your stay!

If there’s anything else you’d like to know before you book or before your stay then please just get in touch.

We wanted a total getaway from mobile phones, social media and the general rat race. The site is set in beautiful surroundings and has wonderful walks straight from our Yurt. We saw a deer, and a Red Squirrel! we found it to be a wonderful bolt hole that we will definitely return to later in the summer.
